Advanced Metering Systems (AMS), or Smart Meters, are able to capture a record of electricity usage in 15-minute intervals and communicate that information to Snap Energy Latino. Smart Meters show when the energy was actually consumed.

Does time of day impact the cost of my energy?

Because peak energy usage is between 4 and 6PM, running dishwashers and clothes dryers later at night will reduce strain on the power grid and cost you less.

One kilowatt (kW) of power is equivalent to one hour of time. The amount of electricity used each billing period is expressed as a kilowatt-hour and is noted on your bill.

Will unplugging chargers, hair dryers, etc. lower my energy costs?

Yes. Anything you plug in uses electricity and generates heat. So, get in the habit of turning off lights, TVs, and other devices when you leave a room, especially during warmer weather.

Can I make an old appliance more energy efficient?

Of course! Your dryer, for example, can be made more efficient if you dry loads back-to-back, and if you dry lighter clothing in separate loads from towels and other heavy materials. Remember to clean the lint screen between each load. And, be sure to use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the residual heat in the dryer. Throwing a dry towel in with your wet load can speed up drying time, too.

Should I turn off computers and office machines or leave them on?

Turn off computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, etc. when they are not in use. Also, set computers to switch to sleep mode when idle for more than a few minutes.

How can I pay less for hot water?

By using less water, first of all. Shortening shower time can help. Cutting showers in half will reduce water heating costs by 33 percent. Also, wrap the hot water tank with insulation. This is especially valuable for older water heaters with little internal insulation. Be sure to leave the air intake vent uncovered when insulating a gas water heater.

Will adding insulation in my attic reduce my costs?

By increasing your attic insulation up to R-38, you can reduce heating costs by as much as 25 percent, regardless of your electricity plan.

Do windows in a home or business affect energy costs?

Yes, a lot! Seal and caulk windows and add storm windows for greater insulation value. Keep blinds drawn during the summer to lower air conditioning costs. During the winter, open the drapes and let the sun heat your home. Regardless of which electricity plan you have, well-sealed windows will lower your bill.

How much electricity do energy-saving light bulbs use?

Energy-saving bulbs help to lower electricity costs. But, the best thing you can do is turn light bulbs off.
